B.S (Hons) Dental Technology

Dental Technology is the technical side of dentistry where a dental technician, on prescription of a dentist, makes any prosthesis or appliance for the head and neck. This could consist of:

  • Artificial teeth such as complete dentures, partial dentures, crowns and bridges and implant supported dentures in various materials such as acrylics, alloys, and ceramics;
  • Removable orthodontic appliances consisting of springs and retainers in acrylic bases for the movement of teeth. Mouth guards to protect against sports injuries;
  • Maxillofacial appliances such as artificial eyes, ears, and facial prostheses that may be required after surgical treatment.
  • Dental technicians do not have direct contact with patients. Instead they work in a dental laboratory where various prosthetic appliances are custom made. Dental technicians can be thought of as artists who, with a thorough understanding of dental materials science, use their artistic skills to fabricate the form, colour and function of individual teeth or maxillofacial prostheses for a patient. The fact that the product can affect the health and appearance of a person demands of the technician a high level of responsibility and accuracy.

    B.S (Hons) Dialysis Technology

    Dialysis is the artificial process of eliminating waste (diffusion) and unwanted water (ultra- filtration) from the blood. Our kidneys do this naturally. Some people, however, may have failed or damaged kidneys which cannot carry out the function properly - they may need dialysis. Dialysis may be used for patients who have become ill and have acute kidney failure (temporary loss of kidney function), or for fairly stable patients who have permanently lost kidney function. In recent years the technology and techniques in the dialysis process have evolved opening many new options for those who require frequent dialysis procedures. The number of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease is also increasing.
    The Program will provides students with the opportunity to study the principles of dialysis, basic medical science of the kidney, fluid and electrolyte balance, hematologic aspects, infectious diseases, dialysis systems and equipment, vascular access to circulation, blood chemistries, complications of renal failure, psychosocial aspects and an overview of peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation. The program seeks to prepare students to work under the supervision of highly skilled medical professionals.

    B.S (Hons) Emergency & Intensive Care (Health) Technology

    Health technology assessment is a multi-disciplinary field of policy analysis that examines the medical, economic, social and ethical implications of the incremental value, diffusion and use of a medical technology in health care. It is intended to provide a bridge between the world of research and the world of decision-making. Health technology assessment is an active field internationally and has seen continued growth fostered by the need to support management, clinical, and policy decisions. It has also been advanced by the evolution of evaluative methods in the social and applied sciences, including clinical epidemiology and health economics. Health policy decisions are becoming increasingly important as the opportunity costs from making wrong decisions continue to grow.

    B.S (Hons) Medical Laboratory Technology (Pathology)

    The course of study is a combination of instruction in fundamental principles of selected laboratory techniques as well as clinical experience in affiliated medical laboratories. Students learn theory and to perform clinical laboratory procedures in phlebotomy, microbiology, blood banking, clinical pathology, hematology, immunology and serology. They also learn to operate and maintain basic clinical laboratory equipment. Medical Laboratory Technologist performs a large variety of laboratory tests and procedures that assist physicians in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Medical Laboratory Technology focuses on the analysis of human blood and body fluids for microorganisms and cellular and chemical components. Preparation of tissue samples for microscopic examination is also covered.

    B.S (Hons) Surgical Technology (Operation Theatre)

    Surgical Technology program prepares graduates to assist the surgeon in the operating room. Surgical technologists are important members of the surgical team who prepare the operating room equipment and instruments, assist the patient before, during, and after surgery, and pass the instruments to the surgeon during procedures. Surgical technologists work under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses and other surgical personnel.
    Surgical technologists handle the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. They have the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and are constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. Duties are as follows:
     Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure Scrubs, gowns and gloves
     Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for procedure
     Prepares sterile dressings
     Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization
     Assists other members of team with terminal cleaning of room.

    B.S (Hons) Radiology Technology (Imaging)

    The Radiologic Technology (RAD) Program that combines classroom studies, hands-on exercises in well-equipped laboratories, and intensive supervised clinical practice in affiliated hospitals. Some prerequisite courses, including human anatomy and physiology, must be completed prior to admission. Applicants must attend at least one information session, and complete the admissions assessment (A2) with the minimum qualifying scores, within one year of the application deadline as part of the qualifications for admission to the RAD Program.
    Upon completion of the Program, graduates will be able to:
    1. Take diagnostically acceptable radiographs of any or all parts of the body.
    2. Practice appropriate radiation safety measures.
    3. Communicate and interact appropriately and effectively with patients, patients’ family and friends, peers, staff, and supervisors.
    4. Work effectively as a team member with students, staff, and radiologists.
    5. Maintain professional and ethical behavior as a healthcare provider.
    6. Adapt patient positioning, projections, and technical factors based on patient condition.
    7. Discuss the value of life-long learning and being an active member of a professional society.
